Bathurst Lighthouse has marked this corner of Rottnest Island since 1900, and it still anchors every photograph taken here. This aerial view holds the lighthouse on the left, the Thomson Bay settlement tucked behind the dunes, and a dark rock outcrop sitting alone in the shallows — with emerald reef fanning out to the right and boats moored on the horizon.

The lighthouse is more than a landmark. It was built after the wreck of the City of York in 1899, and its light has guided vessels into Thomson Bay for over a century. Today it sits above Pinky's Beach Club and the boardwalk, watching bikes and quokkas rather than shipping — the single most recognisable structure on Wadjemup.

About The Location

Bathurst Lighthouse went up in 1900, built after the City of York was wrecked off the island the year before. It has guided boats into Thomson Bay for more than a century, and it still anchors every single photograph anyone takes at this end of Rottnest.

I framed it on the left with the settlement tucked behind the dunes, the dark rock outcrop alone in the shallows, and the emerald reef fanning out to the right. Boats sitting on the horizon in the bay finish it off.
