Bunker Bay Canvas Print — Cape Naturaliste, Western Australia

On a calm morning the boats come in close at Bunker Bay and sit over the reef, which from the air reads as dark patchwork under clear blue water. This aerial photograph catches exactly that: the moored boats, the reef spreading beneath them, and the headland with its houses closing off the far end of the bay.

This is Bunker Bay as a working bay rather than an empty postcard. It's the northern tip of the Margaret River region, sheltered enough that boats sit comfortably at anchor while the open Indian Ocean coast a few kilometres west is unusable. Between May and September, whales pass this headland on migration — a spectacle you can watch from the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse boardwalk just up the road.

Personally shot by Australian aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. Two kinds of fine detail have to survive here — the reef structure showing through the water and the small moored boats scattered across it — and the drone's 100MP Hasselblad camera keeps both sharp enough to reward standing close to a large print.

Get a properly still morning at Bunker Bay and the boats come in close and sit right over the reef. From above, that reef reads as dark patchwork under the blue, and the hulls float on top of it like they have been placed there.

I could have waited for the boats to clear out and shot the pristine version. I did not want to. This is a bay people actually use — they anchor here, dive here, fish the salmon run here — and the boats give the frame scale and a heartbeat.

Holding both the reef detail through the water and those small boats sharp in one exposure takes real resolution, and the 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro manages it comfortably. If you keep a boat down this end of the coast, have a very close look at this one.
