Wategos Beach curves away beneath the Byron Bay headland with surfers working a clean bank just off the sand. Rainforest runs right down to the dunes and the houses sit half hidden in it — the combination that makes Wategos instantly recognisable to anyone who has been.

Here is the thing about Wategos that explains everything else: it is one of the very few north-facing beaches on the entire east coast of Australia. That single quirk of geography gives it the shelter, the gentler waves and the forgiving bank.

It is why an enormous number of people caught their first proper wave right here, and why the water stays workable when the rest of the coast is a mess. I framed this with the beach curving beneath the headland and the rainforest running down to the dunes behind it.
