Wategos Rainforest Framed Canvas — Byron Bay, NSW

Subtropical rainforest spills right down to the sand at the quiet end of Wategos Beach, with hillside homes half-buried in the canopy and a handful of surfers sitting on the bank offshore. This is the greener side of Byron — and the water turns almost jade in the shallows beneath it.

That rainforest is no accident. The Cape Byron State Conservation Area has been under restoration for decades, bringing back the littoral rainforest that once covered this headland. It's why Wategos looks like nowhere else on the east coast: tropical bush, jade water and million-dollar homes hiding in the trees.

Personally shot by Australian aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. Two demanding textures share this frame — dense canopy above and transparent water below — and greens and blues fight each other badly in print. The drone's 100MP Hasselblad camera holds both without either going lurid.

None of that green is accidental. The headland has been under rainforest restoration for decades, bringing back the littoral forest that originally covered Cape Byron — so what looks wild is actually the result of a lot of patient work.

Green and blue are a nightmare together in print — push one and the other goes lurid. Holding dense canopy above and transparent water below in the same exposure is where the 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro does its work. A few surfers were sitting on the bank the whole time I was up.
