Coogee Beach Shipwreck Canvas Wall Art — Fremantle, WA

Just off the sand at Coogee Beach, south of Fremantle, the wreck of the Omeo has rested in the shallows since 1905 — now the centrepiece of the Coogee Maritime Trail and one of the very few shipwrecks in Australia you can snorkel to straight from the beach. This aerial photograph captures it from above, the skeleton dark and dramatic beneath clear turquoise water.

The Omeo was a sailing ship driven ashore in a gale and simply left where she lay. More than a century later she has become an artificial reef, alive with fish and seagrass, sitting in water shallow enough that you can wade out and be floating over maritime history in under a minute.

Personally shot by Perth-based aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. The drone's 100MP Hasselblad camera reads the wreck's structure straight through the surface — hull lines, marine growth and the sand around it — in remarkable detail at every print size.

About The Location

The Omeo has been lying in Coogee's shallows since 1905 — driven ashore in a gale and simply left where she landed. She is close enough to shore that snorkellers wade straight out to her, which makes the Coogee Maritime Trail one of the most accessible pieces of maritime history in the country.

A century on, she has become an artificial reef — fish, seagrass, the whole ecosystem growing over her. From the air the wreck turns graphic: that dark skeleton laid on pale sand under clear turquoise.

The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro read the hull structure straight through the water. I have flown a lot of beautiful empty water on this coast — there is something completely different about flying over a beach that keeps its history right there in the shallows.
