If Perth has one landmark building, it is the Indiana on Cottesloe's foreshore — the white colonial-style teahouse that has stood above the sand since 1996, built on the site of the original 1910 Indiana Tea House. This aerial photograph places it exactly where it belongs: presiding over the beach, the terraced lawns and the Norfolk pines, with the Indian Ocean running out beyond.

No building in Western Australia appears in more photographs. It's the backdrop to Sculpture by the Sea every March, to countless weddings, and to the sunset crowd that gathers on the terraces below it year-round. You cannot photograph Cottesloe without it, and nobody would want to.

It is the backdrop to Sculpture by the Sea every March, to an enormous number of weddings, and to the sunset crowd that gathers on the terraces below it. I framed it from above, presiding over the sand and the Norfolk pines with the ocean running out behind.

Architecture and water together is a real test — hard built lines against soft moving ocean, and most files give up one for the other.
