Eagle Bay Poster Print — Dunsborough, Western Australia

A spine of granite boulders running out into bright turquoise, reef shadows spreading underneath, and water clear enough to read the bottom right across the frame. There is a single swimmer out in the open water — the only thing giving away the scale. Without them, this could be anything.

That ambiguity is the appeal. Shot over the sheltered northern face of Cape Naturaliste, where Geographe Bay stays glassy while the open coast blows out, this reads as much like an abstract painting as a photograph of a specific Western Australian beach.

About The Location

There is one swimmer in this photograph, and they are doing an enormous amount of work. Take them out and you have no idea what you are looking at — the granite spine could be a mountain range, the reef could be ink in water. Leave them in and the whole scene snaps into scale.

I flew this over the rocks at Eagle Bay on a morning when the water was so clear I could read the bottom right across the frame. On the protected side of Cape Naturaliste you get days like that regularly; out on the open coast you would wait a season for it.

The 100MP Hasselblad camera picks up the reef shadows and granite texture in enough detail that even a modest poster print holds together properly up close. People ask me if this one is a painting more often than any other frame I have taken.
