Eagle Bay Aerial Photography Print — Western Australia

Shot straight down, with no horizon at all. Granite and reef fill the top of the frame against pale sand; turquoise water fills the bottom. Read it as texture rather than a beach and it works like an abstract painting — most people take a second or two to work out what they are actually looking at, which is exactly the appeal.

This is the perspective only a drone can give you, over one of the clearest stretches of water in Western Australia. Eagle Bay sits on the sheltered northern side of Cape Naturaliste, where Geographe Bay stays flat and transparent long after the Indian Ocean side has been churned up by the sea breeze.

Personally shot by Australian aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. A pure top-down frame is entirely dependent on fine detail — there is no dramatic sky or horizon to carry it — so the drone's 100MP Hasselblad camera does all the work, resolving reef structure, granite grain and sand ripple in a single exposure that stays crisp at large format.

Point the camera straight down and a beach stops being a beach. No horizon, no sky, no up or down — just granite and reef against pale sand at the top of the frame, turquoise filling the bottom. It becomes pure texture and colour.

This is the frame I show people when they ask why I bother with a drone. You cannot stand anywhere on the Cape Naturaliste coast and see this. It only exists from directly above, and only on the still days Eagle Bay gets because it faces north away from the sea breeze.
