Where Oyster Harbour meets King George Sound, Emu Point is Albany's gentle side — calm, sheltered water in shifting bands of aqua and green, white sand, and the kind of stillness the south coast rarely shows. This aerial photograph captures the protected channel glowing between sand and sea.

Albany's coastline is mostly drama: The Gap, the cliffs of Torndirrup, Salmon Holes taking the full weight of the Southern Ocean. Emu Point is the exception. The water inside the point stays calm and glassy even when the ocean beaches are heaving, which is why locals swim here year-round and why the sandbars turn it those soft, almost tropical colours.

It sits where Oyster Harbour opens into King George Sound, and the water inside the point stays calm and glassy even when the ocean beaches are heaving. I flew over the channel where the sandbars turn the water into these soft bands of aqua and green you would swear were tropical.
