Hamelin Bay is the beach where wild stingrays glide through the shallows around your ankles — smooth rays and eagle rays that have been cruising this shoreline since the old fishing days, when scraps came off the boats at the jetty. This aerial photograph captures the bay's full sweep from above: white sand, clear turquoise water and the sandbars reading through the surface.

There is real history under this water. The remains of the historic timber jetty still sit off the beach, and Hamelin Bay is one of Western Australia's most significant shipwreck sites — a graveyard of vessels lost in the gales of the 1880s. Today it sits at the quiet southern end of the Margaret River region, near the Boranup karri forest and Cape Leeuwin.

Hamelin Bay has the best welcoming committee on the WA coast. Wild stingrays cruise the shallows right where people stand — smooth rays and eagle rays, some of them enormous — a tradition going back to when the fishing boats cleaned their catch at the old jetty.

There is more under this water than rays. Hamelin Bay is one of the most significant shipwreck sites in Western Australia; a fleet of ships was lost here in the gales of the 1880s, and the timber jetty remains are still out there.

From the air the bay gives all of it up at once — clear turquoise over white sand, sandbars readable through the surface, the shoreline arcing toward the karri country. The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro reads straight through the water. Between the surf breaks and the vineyards, this is the Margaret River region's gentlest corner.
