Manly Beach Wall Art — Manly, New South Wales

This aerial photograph looks down the northern end of Manly Beach, where Norfolk pines throw long shadows across golden sand and a timber groyne reaches out into the water. Swimmers move through the shallows as the water shifts from pale green to a deeper turquoise offshore.

Those pines are the signature of this beach, planted along the promenade generations ago and among the first things visitors notice arriving by ferry. "Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care" was Manly's advertising line a century ago, and it still holds up on a quiet weekday morning.

About The Location

This one looks over the northern end of Manly Beach, close to where the Norfolk pines line the promenade and throw long shadows across the sand in the morning light. People are scattered along the beach under the trees, a few swimmers are out past the waves, and a timber groyne runs out into the water, which is what gives the shot its structure. The water goes from pale green in the shallows to a much deeper turquoise further out, with a line of foam tracing the same curve the whole way along.

I flew this from the beach near the Corso end, an easy walk from the ferry terminal at Manly Wharf. Thirty minutes across the harbour from Circular Quay and you're on the sand, which is part of why this beach has always drawn a crowd, going back to the 1964 world surfing championships held here. The Norfolk pines you can see the shadows of were planted along the beachfront generations ago, and they're one of the first things you notice arriving by ferry.

If you keep walking south past Shelly Beach there's a short, steep track up to Shelly Headland Upper Lookout, which gives a proper view back over the beach and out to the Pacific. North Head Sanctuary is a longer walk or a short drive, with old fortifications and coastal lookouts over both the ocean and Sydney Harbour. There's also a sea cave locally known as the Manly Wormhole near Queenscliff, a genuine tunnel through the rock that a lot of visitors never find. Back in town, Manly Town Hall on Belgrave Street is worth a look if you want a break from the beach itself.

I shot this on the DJI Mavic 4 Pro with its 100MP Hasselblad camera, which holds the pine shadows, the groyne timber and the individual swimmers all sharp at once, even though they sit at completely different scales in the frame. It's a busier composition than a lot of my aerial photography, and that's the point of this one, showing Manly as it actually is on a good morning rather than an empty stretch of sand.

A hundred years ago Manly's own advertising line was "seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care," and looking at this stretch of sand on a weekday morning, it still feels true. The beach runs in one long curve from the Corso all the way to Queenscliff, and this frame catches just one section of it, close enough to make out individual people and boards without losing the sweep of the water. Aerial photography of Manly Beach like this rewards a second look, because so much of what makes it distinctive, the tree line, the groyne, the way the crowd thins out toward the northern end, only comes through this clearly in an aerial view.
