Misery Beach, tucked into the Torndirrup peninsula near Albany, was crowned Australia's Best Beach by Tourism Australia in 2022 — a tiny, perfect pocket of powder-white sand and gin-clear water beneath a granite headland. This aerial photograph shows exactly why the title landed here.

Blink on the drive out from Albany and you will miss the turn-off. It is that small, and that easy to overlook — which for years is precisely how the locals liked it. The water does a trick you do not expect from the Southern Ocean: so transparent the granite boulders below simply hang there, the sand glowing under an almost tropical blue.

I flew over on a clear day and the water was doing its trick: so transparent that the granite boulders below just hang there, with the sand glowing under a blue you would never expect from the Southern Ocean.
