Beneath the granite slopes of the Torndirrup peninsula, Misery Beach keeps its perfection quietly — a small, sheltered cove of white sand and astonishingly clear water on Albany's wild south coast. This aerial photograph leans into that quiet: the stillness of the cove, the weight of the headland, and the Southern Ocean's blue held briefly at bay.

Albany's coastline is mostly drama — The Gap and Natural Bridge, the blowholes, the cliffs of Torndirrup taking the full force of the Southern Ocean. Misery Beach is the exception: one small pocket where all that violence stops and the water simply sits still and clear.

About The Location

I have photographed Misery Beach more than once, and this is the softer side of it. Rather than shouting about the famous white sand, I flew in closer and lower and let the cove's shelter do the talking.
