Mullaloo Beach Wall Art — Mullaloo, Western Australia

This aerial photograph looks down the shoreline in front of the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club, where white sand gives way to a wide band of turquoise water before deepening to teal further out. A couple of walkers with paddleboards cross the sand, their shadows stretching long in the morning light.

Mullaloo sits north of Perth's busier beaches, and it keeps a quieter, more local feel. Swell Restaurant, the Mullaloo Pub and a run of cafes on Grafton Street sit just back from the sand, with Tom Simpson Park a short walk south for shaded lawns and picnic spots.

About The Location

I flew this one up from the beach in front of the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club, on a calm morning with the water about as clear as it gets on this stretch of the Perth coast. The colour change is the whole story here: bone white sand gives way to pale shallows, then a wide band of turquoise, then a deeper teal further out where the water gets noticeably deeper. A couple of people were walking the shoreline with paddleboards under their arms, and you can see their shadows stretching long across the sand.

Mullaloo doesn't get the crowds that some of the closer-in Perth beaches do, and that's part of why I keep coming back to fly it. The car park by the surf club puts you within a two-minute walk of the sand, and Swell Restaurant and the Mullaloo Pub sit right there if you want breakfast or a drink afterward. Grafton Street has a run of cafes, Dats Amore and Dome among them, and there's a fish and chip shop by the water that's been there for years.

If you head south a little, Tom Simpson Park has the shaded lawns, the barbecues and the playgrounds that make this such a family beach on weekends. I've flown from the grass there plenty of times, drone up before the wind picks up in the afternoon, back down before the parents start looking for their kids to come in from the water. Mullaloo Beach Lookout, further north near Ocean Reef, gives a longer view down the coast if you want to see how far this white sand actually runs.

This particular flight was with the DJI Mavic 4 Pro and its 100MP Hasselblad camera, which is what lets the water hold its colour and clarity even blown up to a metre wide. Small details stay sharp too, like the individual footprints in the sand and the texture of the ripples sitting just under the surface. Aerial photography of Mullaloo Beach like this is one of those shots where the ocean does almost all the work.

I've photographed a lot of the coast between Perth and the Sunshine Coast at this point, and Mullaloo still stands out for how consistently clean the water colour comes up. Some days there's a bit of haze that softens everything; this was one of the clear ones, where the greens and blues separate out properly and the beach reads almost like a map. It's a beach a lot of local Perth families know well but that doesn't get much attention outside Perth, and that's exactly why I wanted another angle of it in the collection.
