Off the Dunsborough coastline, Gannet Rock stands alone in the clear water of Geographe Bay — a granite outcrop ringed by reef and the shifting blues of the bay, beloved by divers, snorkellers and seabirds alike. This aerial photograph places it as a solitary landmark in a field of extraordinary water.

The setting is everything here. Because Geographe Bay faces north, sheltered behind Cape Naturaliste, it holds a calmness the open Indian Ocean coast simply never achieves. That is why boats run out from Dunsborough to this rock all summer, and why the water around it grades so cleanly from pale turquoise to deep blue.

About The Location

For this one I pulled back rather than moving in close, because the space around Gannet Rock is half the story. One granite outcrop, reef around its base, and then nothing but Geographe Bay grading from turquoise out to deep blue.

I circled with the drone until the light sat properly on the water and let the rock hold the composition alone. Boats run out here from Dunsborough all summer for the diving, and the seabirds work the air above it constantly — but from altitude on a still morning it looks like the loneliest place in the South West.

The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro catches the reef spreading dark beneath the surface around it while keeping those wide tonal gradients clean. It is the calmest kind of drama I know how to photograph.
