The entrance to the creek at Palm Beach, with a rock groyne holding the channel and forested hills rising behind. The sand flats spread wide at low tide and the water sits almost motionless — a quiet counterpoint to the surf a few hundred metres away.

Low tide is when these creek mouths reveal themselves properly. The banks emerge, the channel narrows, and you can read the whole shape of the system from above. It's also when the swimming is at its calmest — which is why these creeks are the Gold Coast's worst-kept family secret.

Personally shot by Australian aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. Still water is deceptively hard to photograph well — there's no texture to hide behind and every flaw shows in the gradient. The drone's 100MP Hasselblad camera keeps the sand flats and the motionless channel clean at every print size.
