Hidden along Rottnest Island's quieter northern shore, Parakeet Bay is the beach locals point you to when you ask where to escape the crowds. A small, sheltered curve of brilliantly white sand and shallow turquoise water — and from the air, one of the most striking scenes on the entire island.

Getting there is the filter. It sits further around the northern side than most day-trippers bother to ride, past the settlement and the busier bays, which means the reward for the extra twenty minutes on a bike is frequently having the whole beach to yourself. The sand here is among the whitest on Rottnest.

About The Location

Parakeet Bay is the beach I send people to when they tell me Rottnest is too busy. It sits further around the northern side than most day-trippers bother to ride, and the reward for that extra twenty minutes on a bike is a small sheltered bay with some of the whitest sand on the island.

I flew this on a clear, still morning — the kind where the water goes completely glassy and you can trace the sandbanks from fifty metres up.

The 100MP Hasselblad camera on the Mavic 4 Pro picked up every ripple and reef edge, which is what lets this hold its detail at the big print sizes. In the whole time the drone was up, I do not think a single other person walked onto the beach. That is Parakeet Bay.
