Nineteen kilometres off the coast of Perth, Rottnest Island — Wadjemup to the Whadjuk Noongar people — is Western Australia's favourite escape: sixty-three beaches, twenty bays, no cars, and resident quokkas that made the island world-famous. This aerial photograph captures its coastline from above, where reef, sand and turquoise shallows weave into a scene that is unmistakably Rotto.

The island runs entirely on bikes. There is a ferry from Fremantle, a settlement at Thomson Bay with the Hotel Rottnest and a handful of restaurants, and then thirty-odd kilometres of road with almost nothing on it but bays, salt lakes and quokkas. It has been a day out for Perth families for well over a century.

About The Location

Rottnest never gets old for me. It is a thirty-minute ferry from Fremantle, but the moment the boat rounds into Thomson Bay it feels like you have left the mainland entirely — no cars, just bikes, quokkas in the shade, and sixty-three beaches to choose from.

The island is Wadjemup to the Whadjuk Noongar people, and it has been a day out for Perth families for well over a century. I spent this trip working my way around the coastline, and this frame is the island as I see it from the air: reef and sandbank patterns that look designed, wrapped in water you would swear was backlit.
