Small, sheltered and impossibly clear, Little Salmon Bay is one of Rottnest Island's true gems — home to the island's famous marked snorkel trail and some of the calmest, most transparent water on the southern coast. This aerial photograph captures the bay from above, its protected curve of sand wrapped around shallow reef and glowing turquoise.

About The Location

Little Salmon Bay might be the best snorkel on Rottnest. There is a marked underwater trail winding through the reef, with plaques telling you what you are floating over — it is how a whole generation of WA kids first learned what lives under the water.

It is the smaller, more sheltered neighbour to Salmon Bay proper, and on a calm day the water is so transparent that boats look like they are floating on air. I put the drone up over the middle of the bay to catch the full curve of sand and the reef the trail runs through.

The 100MP Hasselblad sensor on the Mavic 4 Pro holds all that underwater detail through the surface, which is what gives the print its depth. If The Basin is Rottnest's icon, this is its quiet favourite — and the locals prefer it that way.
