Salmon Bay Framed Canvas Print — Rottnest Island, Western Australia

On the southern side of Rottnest, Salmon Bay opens into a sweep of white sand, protected reef and layer upon layer of blue — one of the island's favourite spots for swimming and snorkelling. This aerial photograph captures the bay from above, where the reef reads like a dark mosaic beneath glowing turquoise and the ocean stretches deep blue to the horizon.

Snorkelling is what draws people here. The reef sits shallow and accessible, the charters run out from the settlement, and on a calm day you can float over it for hours. Combine that with the bike ride out from Thomson Bay — past quokkas, salt lakes and half a dozen empty bays — and it makes for one of the great days out in Western Australia.

About The Location

Salmon Bay is where I always end up when the northern beaches get busy. It is a favourite for snorkelling — the reef sits shallow and protected — and on a still day you can see straight to the bottom from the rocks above.

From the air it is better again: the reef spreads out like a dark mosaic under that glowing turquoise, with deep ocean blue pressing in behind it. Getting there is half the pleasure — the ride out from Thomson Bay takes you past quokkas, the salt lakes and half a dozen bays with nobody in them.

I lined the drone up along the bay and let the layers of blue do the talking. The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro holds every bit of reef texture and sand ripple, which is exactly what you need when a frame like this ends up printed over a metre wide.
