Swimmers drifting over reef, sand glowing beneath turquoise shallows, the deep blue of the open ocean beyond — this aerial photograph captures a perfect Rottnest day from the one angle nobody ever sees it: directly above.

From up here, people become part of the composition. Snorkellers trace the reef edges, kids stay in the shallows, and swimmers cut clean lines across the turquoise — small punctuation marks in an enormous amount of blue. Little punctuation marks in an enormous amount of blue. That is the human side of Rottnest, and honestly it is what everybody actually remembers about the place — not the empty version, the one with everyone in it.
