Where the limestone coastline of Rottnest Island meets the open ocean, Salmon Bay unfolds in wide, sweeping layers — pale sand, shallow reef, and bands of turquoise running out to deep blue. This aerial photograph takes in that entire coastal sweep, capturing the scale and stillness that make the island's southern shore so distinctive.

Sometimes the best way to show a place is to pull right back and let the coastline speak. For this one I flew higher and wider than usual, taking in the full sweep of Salmon Bay — limestone edges, reef running parallel to the beach, and those bands of colour stacking out toward open water.

Rottnest's south side has a scale you never feel on the sheltered northern bays. No moorings, no ferries, nothing between you and Antarctica. It is the part of the island that reminds you it is genuinely out at sea.
