Inside Torndirrup National Park on Albany's rugged coast, Salmon Holes is one of Western Australia's most dramatic beaches — a curve of white sand and clear water ringed by granite, named for the salmon that school through here each autumn. This aerial photograph captures the bay from above, where reef and rock frame it like a natural amphitheatre.

This is a beach with a serious reputation. The fishing draws people from across the state during the salmon run, but the same geography that makes it productive makes it dangerous — Salmon Holes has claimed lives, and the warning signs on the path down are there for good reason. It is beautiful and entirely on its own terms.

Salmon Holes is south-coast WA distilled — beautiful, and completely on its own terms. It sits in Torndirrup National Park outside Albany, a white curve of sand held inside granite walls, named for the salmon that run through in autumn.

The fishing pulls people from all over the state, but the same geography that makes it productive makes it dangerous. The warning signs on the path down are there for good reason, and everyone local treats this place with respect.

From the lookout you feel the scale of the Southern Ocean; from the air you see the structure — reef arcing across the bay, rock shelves, water so clear the seafloor reads like a map. The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro caught every granite crack. This is not a gentle beach, and I did not want a gentle photograph.
