Surfers Point at Prevelly is hallowed ground in Australian surfing — home of Main Break and host of the Margaret River Pro, where the world tour comes each year to meet Indian Ocean swell that has travelled thousands of kilometres of open water before it hits this reef. This aerial photograph captures the point from above, swell lines marching in from deep water toward the break.

You feel this place before you see it. The ground-shake of swell hitting the reef carries all the way up to the Prevelly car park. Below it, the Margaret River meets the sea; above it, the lookout draws crowds every big swell. The cellar doors of the Margaret River wine region are ten minutes inland — a contrast that defines this corner of the country.

Personally shot by Australian aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. Capturing scale and texture together is the challenge here — you need the swell lines readable all the way to the horizon and the detail alive in the whitewater up close — and the drone's 100MP Hasselblad camera holds both across every print size.

I flew out over it to get the perspective the lookout cannot give you — swell lines stacked all the way to the horizon, marching in from genuinely deep water before they detonate on the reef. That energy has crossed thousands of kilometres of open Indian Ocean to arrive here.

Holding the scale and the texture together is the trick, and the 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro manages it — you can trace each line of swell from open ocean to impact. I have photographed a lot of gentle water in WA. Margaret River is where the coastline reminds you who is actually in charge.
