The Basin Aerial Wall Art, Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Aerial photography of The Basin, the natural reef pool on Rottnest Island that generations of West Australians learned to swim in. The reef ring holds the water still and clear while the open Indian Ocean works away just metres outside it, and that shelter is the whole reason this place looks the way it does.

You feel it standing in the water. The Basin is calm in a way that makes no sense until you understand what is underneath, and this frame shows exactly that: the dark curve of reef doing its job, the glowing shallows it protects, and the sand channels running through the middle of it all.

A different angle on a place worth returning to

This is not the first Basin frame in the collection, and it is deliberately not the same one. Same reef, same water, but shot on a different flight with different light and a different composition. Rottnest never looks quite the same way twice, which is why it is worth going back.

Personally shot by Australian aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a 100MP Hasselblad camera. Reef seen through water is the first thing to fall apart when a file is enlarged, and it usually turns to green mush. This one holds every ledge, channel and sand ripple sharp, right up to the largest canvas sizes.

I've flown The Basin more than once because it never looks quite the same way twice. This shot is a different angle to the first one I put up — same reef ring, same glowing shallows, but the light and the composition shift enough that it earns its own place rather than just being a duplicate. I fly the Mavic 4 Pro straight overhead for these, which is the only way to actually see the shape of the reef doing its job — holding the water calm while the open ocean works just metres away. If you've stood in that water you know how still it feels. From above you can finally see why.
