The Basin is Rottnest Island's most loved swimming spot, and for good reason: a natural pool of glowing turquoise held inside a ring of dark reef, a short walk from the Thomson Bay settlement. This aerial photograph captures it at its best — luminous shallows, white sand and the deep blue of the Indian Ocean beyond, all in a single frame.

It is the first place most people swim when they arrive. Off the ferry from Fremantle, a five-minute walk or ride from the jetty, and you're floating in water so still and clear it looks like glass. Generations of West Australians learned to swim in this exact pool, which is why the name carries so much weight in Perth.

The Basin is the first place almost everyone swims when they get to Rottnest — a short ferry from Fremantle, then a five-minute walk from the jetty. It is a natural pool cradled by reef, and the water sits so still and clear it looks like glass.

From the ground it is beautiful. From the air it is something else entirely — the dark ring of reef, the luminous shallows inside it, and the deep Indian Ocean blue pressing in from outside.

I positioned the drone directly overhead and waited for the light to fire up the shallows. The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro picks up every ripple in the sand and every dark curve of the reef ring. Generations of West Australians learned to swim in this exact pool.
