Esperance is famous for having the whitest sand in Australia, and Twilight Beach is its showpiece — a sweeping bay on the Great Ocean Drive where granite islands rise straight out of luminous turquoise water. This aerial photograph captures Twilight from above, its iconic rock formations anchoring a scene that barely looks real.

The Great Ocean Drive is a 40-kilometre loop out of Esperance town, and Twilight is the beach everyone stops at. The granite outcrops sitting just offshore are among the most photographed rocks in Western Australia — and part of the Recherche Archipelago, a scatter of over a hundred islands running along this coast.

About The Location

Nothing prepares you for Esperance water. I had seen a thousand photos before I drove the Great Ocean Drive myself, and Twilight Beach still stopped me in my tracks — sand so white it hurts to look at, and blues that seem backlit from below.

I flew out toward the granite islands that make Twilight instantly recognisable and shot back across the bay. Those outcrops are part of the Recherche Archipelago — over a hundred islands scattered along this stretch of coast.

What the 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro caught is honestly what it looks like — no saturation tricks needed, because Esperance does its own colour grading. Locals will tell you this is the whitest sand in Australia. Fly over it once and you will not feel like arguing.
