Out in Duke of Orleans Bay east of Esperance, Wharton Beach hides some of the most remarkable water in the country — turquoise shallows over squeaky-white sand, clear enough to trace every ripple of the seafloor from the air. This aerial photograph moves in close on that water, capturing the textures and colour that make Wharton unforgettable.

The wide views of this bay are spectacular, but the magic is in the detail: sand ripples running like corduroy under the shallows, the shore break drawing white lace over turquoise, everything visible because the water is essentially glass.

After shooting Wharton's big sweeping curve, I brought the drone down lower and just studied the water. The wide views are spectacular, but the magic is in the detail.
