When swell finds Wharton Beach, one of Australia's most beautiful bays becomes one of its most exhilarating — clean waves peeling over squeaky-white sand into water so turquoise it looks tropical. This aerial photograph captures that meeting of surf and colour at Duke of Orleans Bay, east of Esperance.

Most photographs of Wharton show it still and glassy, and fair enough — it does still and glassy better than almost anywhere. But catch it with swell running into the bay and it shows a completely different personality: lines standing up over the white sand and peeling across that ridiculous turquoise.
